Map out your total CO2 footprint and really start making a positive impact!

Organizations emit a large amount of CO2 with their business operations. Just think of the building as an energy guzzler and the staff who travel all over the world for business services. But that is not all. Organizations have much more impact than they think. We also call this impact: the hidden impact. This is the CO2 emissions that are caused throughout the entire life cycle of a product (extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, transportation, use and processing after use). To provide organizations with insight into the hidden impact of their business operations, we have developed a tool that uses carefully chosen standards and key figures (based on scientific data and life cycle analysis calculations of materials) to provide insight into the hidden impact of the building, the working environment, facility services and ICT. In order to maximize the potential of organizations, it is important to know where the greatest impact is made.

The Impact Calculator

With the PHI Impact Calculator, we measure the CO2 footprint of the entire business. For this we use the guidelines form The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, that makes a distinction between three different scopes:

  • Direct CO2 emissions: this is caused by own sources within the organization, you can think of the emissions of your fleet and the use of the building;
  • Indirect CO2 emissions: energy and heat that is purchased, these emissions take place outside the organization, but can be allocated directly to the organization;
  • Indirect CO2 emissions: caused by supply chain partners for business operations, such as the extraction, production and transport of purchased products.

Measuring CO2 footprint

To measure the CO2 footprint of your organization we need the product categories (e.g. work environment), product types (e.g. standard workstation) and the actual products (desk, chair etc.). For these actual products we determine the combination of materials, on the basis of which we calculate the CO2 number. In addition, we want to know which supplier is involved (chain partners), the quantity purchased over a certain period (month/year), the depreciation period or contract period and, if possible, the weight per unit.

The result

The result is an overall picture of the total CO2 footprint of your organization. In the scope ‘hidden impact’ we even delve into the materials of the work environment and facility services and ICT. We also map out more sustainable alternatives based on five scenarios. These include the purchase of recycled content, local partnerships, reduction targets, life cycle extension and treatment of raw material flows after use.
